No one else moved a muscle. They all stared at Meredith Mooney like they were zombies.

“The S-S-Sunnyview S-Spirit?!” Charlie stammered.

“The one and only,” Meredith said spookily.

“What’s the Sunnyview Spirit?” Eugene asked.

“Oh, please!” Meredith snapped. “Haven’t you been listening? He’s the headless ghost who lives in the house! He came floating down the stairs, holding his head in his hands. Because that’s what headless ghosts do. ‘Grooooan!’ he groaned. ‘Moaaaaaan!’ he moaned. ‘Booooo!’ he booed! And then he tried to grab my sister!”

“Did she get away?” asked Sally, who was listening from the next table.

“Of course she did.” Meredith rolled her eyes. “No ghost without a head is a match for my big sister. But the Sunnyview Spirit warned her that the next nosy kid who comes snooping around his house won’t be so lucky. I’m sure you two are too chicken to go back there anyway.”

The kids in the cafeteria looked at Charlie and Eugene, waiting for their response. Even Sally watched.

“Just because we’re afraid doesn’t mean we’re chicken—” Eugene began.
